G-9,
formerly J.A.M., was born Jason Andre Mitchell in Detroit, Michigan. His mother raised him in the Detroit suburb
of Southfield after she divorced his father, a well-known hustler, when Jason was eight. Up through his mid-teens,
young Jason only played with rapping--concentrating on his love of basketball. This changed, however, when he was
fifteen. After seeing MCs like Dogg Pound and Snoop Freestyle, he was left with a feeling of amazement and a sense
of determination to learn more. Jason now had a new interest but hustle was in his blood. He was from the suburbs
but he was a city hustler in his heart. Around this time, he and his partner, 45 (Mark Brooks), purchased a karaoke system that enabled them to loop beats and create songs off mainstream beats. Their first producer, other than themselves, was T. Bright. He produced "At The Party" and "Everyday" on this current CD. The two recorded a song each day and by the time they pieced together enough equipment, they noticed even the O.G.'s wanted to flow. So the group turned into a posse called D.U.C. (Da Unfortunate Click), which became as big as 40 Deep. They hooked up with J. Smooth--a Detroiter that Jason met in high school who produced tracks and played the keyboards. The hustler life would come to an end for him at this point with the deaths of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls. These monumental events made him want to do music in a different way. He had a yearning for knowledge that brought him to God, which led to him becoming a born-again Christian in 1998. The professional result of nearly three years in the Christian lifestyle was the album "Amen"--his first solo ever as Jsun. "I began seeing and feeling truths," he recalls, "which prevented me from promoting it only five months after it was released at the end of 2000." "I always had a problem with the label, 'Gospel' in the music industry. Yet, I always wanted to teach or say something of substance on the mic, thus you have G9: Genius Never Incomplete Nor Equivalent." "Basically, God created what you have here--as street and about the money as it may be." Coinciding with this change in direction, Jsun (G-9) and 45 created a company called Exoduce Publishing. The first album they published was his cousin Dwele's album "Rize". Jsun had a hundred tapes duplicated and put together at his 9-to-5. After moving all the units in a week, Dwele signed with a manager, which led to a signing with Virgin Records. Jsun chose to stick with the independent role and craft his talents to entertain the secular audience. "Life is full of cycles--it goes in 360's." In 2003 Jason moved head on with dedication and determination to complete his CD. Jason felt the need to show that he had something to say of relevance and now it was time to show the entire world what he could do. He handled every aspect of his music from searching, reviewing, and ultimately producing or purchasing the beats. As a prolific writer he used his time wisely only writing when the spirit moved him. Choosing to work with many talented engineers, producers, and studios from the Detroit area to St. Louis, while keeping in mind the need for that beat to be able to enhance his wondrous lyrics. He was looking for beats that people could feel; undeniably, lyrically he was already being felt. At the same time he was absorbing all the information needed to craft his own thoughts and ideas from start to finish. While obtaining the knowledge, he started accumulating the equipment necessary to do this. Now with all the experience, equipment, and know-how he is capable of doing it all, which makes the next CD worth looking forward to. "This is who I am with Him—not who I am through compromising with religion or religious efforts." --A producer, composer, arranger, businessman, artist and worshiper of facts beyond faith or religious bondage. |
